There is little consumers can do to find out whether a mortgage company is on shaky ground, says a state agency caught by surprise when Tucson-based mortgage giant First Magnus Financial Corp. closed Thursday.

2007-08-22 Someone knew...
I am sure many people did see what was coming, but perhaps for fear of losing their jobs did not speak out.

This points to the need in some industries for anonymous whistleblowing.  It can also be abused, obviously, by individuals wanting to smear competitors, but the more concrete the information is the more likely it is of value.
