Notes about Report from the Pow-wow 2008

We made two visits to the Thunder in the Desert series of events, once on a relatively quiet day early in the pow-wow, and once on the main competition day Jan 1.  The early day actually might have been the most fun for the kids, as they had a children's dance where everyone was invited to join in, and with gentle humor first had the audience clap for each child to determine the 'winner' - then declared all the kids winners and gave them each a dollar.  The idea is to encourage young Native Americans to get in touch with their culture, I think, but even us mixed-up Americans were invited in.

The main competition day we couldn't stay long but the outfits and dances are beautiful even the bit we saw.  I liked the sign out front too, attached to the event schedule - 'Put your watch in your pocket, all times are Indian time'.  "

Parade of contestants and veterans, I believe --gv from the pow-wow --gv some of the dancers --gv
