2010-01-25 Customer Service - Not:
In November I purchased a pendant light from Northside Lighting and Fan in Tucson, Arizona.  The display fixture was the last of its kind in the store, but the sales clerk informed us that they would be willing to pull it down and package it so we could check it as baggage on our plane trip home.  We witnessed her instruct the “warehouse” person to package the unit for airline travel.

When we returned home, the double strength cardboard box was intact with no visible damage, dents or tears due to mistreatment.  When we opened the box, the glass pieces of the fixture were shattered.  Our inspection revealed that it had not been pack adequately and consisted of  a couple layers of bubble wrap, one layer on the bottom, one on the top,  half a dozen pieces of wadded up paper and wrapping around the metal fixture units… half the box was empty of packing.

When we called to explain the extent of the damage, the good condition of the shipping box and the fact that the breakage was obvious due to the lack of adequate packing, I was asked for my address and was assured that the replacement glass parts would be mailed directly to me.  End of problem, wrong….

After 3 weeks of waiting and no replacement glass parts I called the sales clerk and was told that the owner of the store was not going to replace the broken parts.  I was told that the owner had instructed her to tell me to take it up with the airlines because it was obviously their fault.  After several unreturned calls to the owner I finally made contact and was told by the owner that “He was too busy to deal any further with this” and “that he couldn’t be expected to be responsible”.  Northside Lighting reneged on their offer of replacement, made no offer of a shared cost to correct the broken light fixture, did not  follow through on a promise to contact the manufacturer regarding the replacement parts and have no concern that I now have a light fixture that I cannot use.

It is now two months later and I realize that the moral of this story is to be very careful doing business with Northside Lighting and Fan in Tucson, Arizona.  Especially with anything that involves mail orders and shipping.  They are very willing to sell their products but they “can’t be expected to be responsible” if you have a problem.

2009-12-14 Sold $1300 defective light and accused me of damage
We purchased a +$1300 crystal sphere light from Northside Lighting which had been hanging in their showroom.  Installing the light was very time consuming and laborious, as each crystal was rewrapped separately. After it was hung we noted that the sphere had a gap.  We carefully inspected the light and noted that the wire for one of the crystals had been cut and retied, creating a gap because there was now too little wire to hold it in the correct position in the sphere.  I just called Northside Lighting and was shocked to hear their response---and tone of voice.  'They didn't notice that when they wrapped it after taking it down'.  So, she was implying that we are responsible?  Also, note that we have done much business with them over the years.  We have had to return other lights that were missing parts, etc. If Northside Lighting does not correct the problem I will report to the BBB and file suit in small claims.  This light was rather expensive, and I don't appreciate being accused of damaging it. --guest

When we contacted them they said tough that they were not going to provide the missing crystals.
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING from this merchant. I have also filed a complaint with the BBB of Southern Arizona --guest

2009-07-12 Terrible Customer Service
My experience was even worse than Roberta L.'s.  Intending to furnish a new Arizona room that a builder was preparing for me, there was a certain wall light that I admired on Northside's display wall.  I wanted to buy two of them, so Northside ordered them, at my request, to "Rush" from the supplier for an additional $35.  I gave my visa card information at that time.  And I can add that I also bought, with cash, about $150 worth of other lights that Northside had in stock.  Supposedly the lights that were out of stock were to arrive in four days.  The lights themselves cost $140 apiece.  But still, after two weeks, they had not yet come into Northside, according to the clerks there, and by this time I was preparing to leave Tucson to return to my permanent home in Washington State.  So I called the store and explained the dilemma, said I would be unable to accept the lights because I would be gone from the city for nine months, and asked that the store cancel the order.  Very patiently and without any recriminations I explained that I would be happy to continue to be charged the "Rush" fee but that I would like a refund on the purchase.  I was told by the lady I bought the lights from that that the owner, Ed, was out of town and could not be reached, and that he might insist on a restocking fee.  I asked how much it would be, and she said not more than $50.  I thought it odd that Ed couldn't be reached, but remained patient. Another week passed without hearing one way or the other about the exact sum to be charged for "restocking" these two small light fixtures, although I called several times.  At last the clerk called me, as I was traveling back to Washington in my RV, and (I thought rather apologetically) revealed that "Ed," the "grouchy man" mentioned in Roberta L.'s critique, had imposed a restocking fee of more than $180!!!  So the result is that I paid approximately $215 for nothing at all, thanks to "Ed."  I almost decided to dispute the visa bill, but then decided that life is simply too short.  But I will never go into Northside Lighting again, and I would earnestly warn any customers to get in writing any promises that depend on the owner's say-so or goodwill.  Otherwise, be prepared to get screwed. --guest

2009-02-14 Like buying from someone's car http://sunlighting.net/

I must agree with other reviewer. They don't use computers so they can't track how long orders are taking (or if the paperwork is lost... happened twice to me) and can't verify you made a purchase (no returns, even on small unopened accessories like a remote). This is NOT how other stores work. They have a big selection, but don't think it's safe to only buy what you see. They are the only seller in town for some brands. This means if you buy, say, a Craftmade fan/lamp and you need to order something (say, broken glass) you'll have to deal with this huge headache. My advice, go to Sun Lighting on broadway (they even have a web page). --guest

I promise I am not overreacting to this when I tell all who are shopping for lighting to avoid Northside Lighting & Fan Company on 1st and Ft. Lowell in Tucson. Their annex store on 1st is also terrible. I ordered lights in September 2007 and they could not get their act together until November 21st!They do not call you back and if you don't call them-they don't care. They have a great selection of all types of lights, but I'd rather spend my money elsewhere!Do not shop there!!!" --guest
