'50 Years: Civil Rights in Arizona from 1963 to Today' (exhibit) Tuesday 01/15/13 12:00 AM at University of Arizona Main Library
On August 28, 1963 thousands were drawn to the National Mall to be part of what would become a historic event: the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. On a national level, the march spurred the passing of important civil rights legislation. Special Collections newest exhibition reviews how, 50 years later, the fight for civil rights has impacted local Tucson communities. A companion exhibition focusing on national civil rights issues is also on display in the UA Main Library from Jan. 15 - Aug. 30, 2013.
Highlights of the exhibit include national civil rights legislative documents from the Morris K. and Stewart L. Udall Collections, documents from the Tucson Council for Civic Unity archive detailing the council's effort to end discrimination and segregation in Tucson and Arizona, and photographs and papers from civil rights groups and individuals representing the African American, Native American, Asian American, LGBTQ, and Mexican American communities of Tucson. An audio kiosk playing songs from the civil rights era is also part of the exhibition.
Special Collections is open Monday-Friday. Please view the gallery hours to plan your visit.

Taking on Macbeth Sunday 05/19/13 07:30 PM at The Red Barn Theater
Local playwright Vince Flynn's original work, Taking on Macbeth, is the fifth play in The Red Barn Theatre Company's 2013 season. This entertaining comedy-drama starring Ken Beider, Matt Brown, Renata Rauschen, Daniel Reichel and Ina Shivack will open May 10 and run through May 26.
Taking on Macbeth was developed in sessions with the Old Pueblo Playwrights, and debuted last year as a staged reading at their new play festival. These plays are performed by actors reading from scripts, offering the writer an opportunity to see and hear audience reaction and receive helpful feedback. âHaving a full-out production, however, is any playwrightâs dream,â Flynn says, âand being able to cast my own characters and move them off the page and onto the stage is about as good as it gets.â
The play centers on a father and son. Martin, the father, is a local celebrity and a veteran actor who owns a popular bar in a large Midwestern town. His son A.J. is an ex-Marine recently returned from combat. The local theatre group is staging Macbeth this year, and everyone knows that Martin is a shoo-in for the title roleâeveryone, that is, but the director and AJ. Even though he is an inexperienced actor, AJ has caught the directorâs eye and is now a candidate for the lead. Martinâs understanding wife, the very flamboyant director, and AJâs new girlfriend all raise the stakes in this dynamic play.
No stranger to theatre, Flynn has been a high school drama teacher since 1970 in international schools in Europe and Asia as well as in schools in the United States. He has directed numerous school and community plays and musicals. He also wrote the book and lyrics for Affair Exchange, a musical comedy that enjoyed a successful run at The Playhouse in San Francisco.
Performances will be on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 with Sunday matinees at 2. Ticket prices are $16 general admission, $13 for seniors, military and students. The Red Barn Theatre is located 948 N. Main, one block south of Speedway Boulevard. For more information or to make reservations call (520) 887-6239.
