2011-06-30 Interested in making human spaces wildlife-friendly, and how that may be critical to species survival?
WinWinEcology is not a nuts and bolts how-to, but it is both readable and academically rigorous in making the argument that isolated nature preserves are by themselves not enough to preserve species diversity. So when you're planting Salvias for the hummingbirds or Quail Bush for the quails and finches, you're part of a critical movement for species survival called Reconciliation Ecology. Who knew?
There's more to it than our backyards, of course, and some efforts like wildlife corridors require governmental cooperation. But there really is a bit we can all do, from wildlife gardening to buying shade-grown coffee.
