| Report from the 4th Ave Street Fair - Dec 2007 We stayed 2-3 hrs, I think the most fun stuff was on the small side aisles. Our cousins who also walked the whole fair didn't even see the bald eagle - you have to really slow down and explore! The kids also liked the girl scout booth with craft stuff. | add comment |
| Report from the Peace Fair We made a quick pass thru the Peace Fair last Sat (2/24/07) - nice sunny weather let us visit booths ranging from Amnesty Intl to protecting Jaguars in the Southwest. Low-key, this was an informational fair and not an anti-war rally. We learned more about the Paulo Freire Freedom School which explicitly combines education with a focus on social justice and environmental sustainabilty. We played an African instrument called a Karimba (I think) that has an interesting arrangement of notes - odd notes on the left side and even notes on the right side. Then we signed some petitions, Ruby (my 2 yr old) sampled the candy, met with our friends from the Democratic Playgroup and took off for the library. More on some of the environmental groups and organizations posted in the community a ...read more... | add comment |
| Report from the Pow-wow Attended the Native American pow-wow at Rillito Downs last week (Sat Dec 30 2006), kids and adults both enjoyed. Colorful dances, neat costumes, really the purpose is to preserve and celebrate culture of each Nation but even non-Indian spectators could enjoy the dances. We especially liked the Fire dance, and the everyone-included circle dance lesson afterwards! (Luckily we didn't have to do the put-out-a-burning-coal-barefoot part ;-) " Talking to those manning the booths, got a recommendation for Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie and I think something called Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews, for kids. My 5yr old daughter especially liked watching Derek, a 10-yr old accomplished artist, crafting a decorated pot right there at the fair. He sells online at Nahoni Pottery, I think ...read more... | add comment |
| Report from the Pow-wow 2008 http://www.usaindianinfo.org/ We made two visits to the Thunder in the Desert series of events, once on a relatively quiet day early in the pow-wow, and once on the main competition day Jan 1. The early day actually might have been the most fun for the kids, as they had a children's dance where everyone was invited to join in, and with gentle humor first had the audience clap for each child to determine the 'winner' - then declared all the kids winners and gave them each a dollar. The idea is to encourage young Native Americans to get in touch with their culture, I think, but even us mixed-up Americans were invited in. The main competition day we couldn't stay long but the outfits and dances are beautiful even the bit we saw. I liked the sign out front too, attached to the event schedule - 'Put your watch in yo ...read more... | add comment |

| Visit to Buckelew Farms The Pumpkin Festival & Corn Maze is open to the public weekends thru the end of October. We tried the corn maze without a map - if they didn't post maps at various staions inside the maze we might still be there! Gorgeous draft horse teams pull wagons into the pumpkin patch, where we examined the insect life and chose two pumpkins with character. The petting zoo is run by local 4-H chapters and seems to have inspired my 1st grader that she wants to join a 4-H club. Food was available but we brought our own. Cost of everything else: $4/head to get in, $8 for adults + $6 for 6 and up to do the maze, and a very reasonable 35 cents/pound for the pumpkins. The petting zoo is free but they take donations. We took some video of the playfighting kid goats!"""" | add comment |
