| 2010-06-30 http://www.kold.com/Global/story.asp?S=12694202 "A" Mtn fireworks will start about 9:15 PM this Saturday. If driving up close, however, its advisable to start early as traffic starts to pile up near the mountain. Another idea might be to bike or walk along the Santa Cruz river trail from a mile or so away, where the parking and traffic would be easier. The Santa Cruz river comes right to the foot of "A" Mtn, allowing for excellent fireworks viewing. Thanks to the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, Desert Diamond Casino, Tucson Electric Power, Cox Communications, Arizona Builders' Alliance, Freeport-McMoRan and the anonymous donors who sponsored this year's event!" | add comment |
| 2008-07-03 "A" Mountain Fireworks - watching ideas Finding a good place to watch the fireworks this Friday evening can be tricky. (unless, of course, you know someone in the neighborhood who is barbequeing!) The Tucson Convention Center is opening their parking lot at $5/head. Another option if you start early might be a picnic along the Santa Cruz river walk. The paved walkway extends north from 29th st, starting right next to the Pima Federal Credit Union. Views across the Santa Cruz up to A mountain should be pretty awesome. Any other ideas out there? Feel free to post replies! | add comment |

| 2010-06-30 Fireworks Safety http://www.fireworksafety.com/ Some tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety: Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket). Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them. Never relight a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water. Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a "designated shooter." Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type. Do not ever use homemade fireworks of illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community. | add comment |

| 2009-04-25 Last day for the Fair! http://www.pimacountyfair.com/ The Pima County Fair has a wonderful set of old-time attractions that seem untouched and unchanged by the electronic age (except that the barker for the side show is a recording). We love the crafters in Old Pueblo Hall tirelessly demonstrating gourd art, woodcarving, bonsai trimming and much more. The petting zoo is free unless you buy food for the critters, and sometimes its better not to - if you want to avoid being mobbed by the friendly goats, that is. Even young wallabies come up to be stroked, according to one staff probably from a breeder in Oregon (unconfirmed). Pima Hall holds a more serious exhibit, about AIDS in Africa. Although I didn't care for the sales pitch on tape for donations to WorldVision, the volunteers there seemed dedicated and honest. We did buy a brac ...read more... | add comment |

| 2012-04-25 Pima County Fair Vs Spring Fling n my opinoin the pima county fair is a much bigger event then the spring fling but the spring fling is less crowded so that might be a plus for people who do not like crowded places. Also the Spring Fling is a good place for familys to go beacuse it has a lot less big rides and much more kid rides which would be good for kids. But in the pima county fair it has a lot bigger rides and they seem to fo for a longer time. List of Pluses about the Pima County Fair 1.The Pima County Fair goes on longer 2.Bigger Rides 3.Longer Ride times in my opinon 4. Bigger event List of pluses about the Spring Fling 1. | 2007-02-26 Report from the Peace Fair We made a quick pass thru the Peace Fair last Sat (2/24/07) - nice sunny weather let us visit booths ranging from Amnesty Intl to protecting Jaguars in the Southwest. Low-key, this was an informational fair and not an anti-war rally. We learned more about the Paulo Freire Freedom School which explicitly combines education with a focus on social justice and environmental sustainabilty. We played an African instrument called a Karimba (I think) that has an interesting arrangement of notes - odd notes on the left side and even notes on the right side. Then we signed some petitions, Ruby (my 2 yr old) sampled the candy, met with our friends from the Democratic Playgroup and took off for the library. More on some of the environmental groups and organizations posted in the community a ...read more... | add comment |
| 2007-01-08 Report from the Pow-wow Attended the Native American pow-wow at Rillito Downs last week (Sat Dec 30 2006), kids and adults both enjoyed. Colorful dances, neat costumes, really the purpose is to preserve and celebrate culture of each Nation but even non-Indian spectators could enjoy the dances. We especially liked the Fire dance, and the everyone-included circle dance lesson afterwards! (Luckily we didn't have to do the put-out-a-burning-coal-barefoot part ;-) " Talking to those manning the booths, got a recommendation for Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie and I think something called Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews, for kids. My 5yr old daughter especially liked watching Derek, a 10-yr old accomplished artist, crafting a decorated pot right there at the fair. | 2008-01-28 Report from the Pow-wow 2008 http://www.usaindianinfo.org/ We made two visits to the Thunder in the Desert series of events, once on a relatively quiet day early in the pow-wow, and once on the main competition day Jan 1. The early day actually might have been the most fun for the kids, as they had a children's dance where everyone was invited to join in, and with gentle humor first had the audience clap for each child to determine the 'winner' - then declared all the kids winners and gave them each a dollar. The idea is to encourage young Native Americans to get in touch with their culture, I think, but even us mixed-up Americans were invited in. The main competition day we couldn't stay long but the outfits and dances are beautiful even the bit we saw. I liked the sign out front too, attached to the event schedule - 'Put your watch in yo ...read more... | add comment |

| 2011-03-05 The 2011 Animal Fair at Reid Park http://www.azanimalfair.com/ Dog party! We went to the Animal Fair this morning, and it seemed like all the dogs in Tucson were there to sniff noses. Calm saint bernards, fat daschunds and even a leashed pot-bellied pig enjoyed the show along with the people. Rescue societies are the heart of the show, and it was good to see so many volunteers giving quality care and a second chance to dogs of every breed, ferrets, horses and even llamas. Adopting or fostering a rescue animal is an excellent way to add a pet to your family. The rescue group also provides support and will take the animal back if it doesn't work out. Main Ave 520-622-6973 "Fresh, Powerful, Intimate" - these are the words that spring to mind (if you're imagining being a drama critic) while watching our local performance of The King and I at the Red Barn Theatre on Main. The tiny stage combined with powerful acting is just an incredible experience. My 8-year old loved it, asking if we could stay and watch it again as soon as the 3-hr play was over. Get tickets early, the Sunday May 10 was sold out by the time we reached the door, luckily we had purchased in advance. | add comment |

| 2011-01-25 Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase 2011 Gem show vendors are already setting up along the I-10 frontage road between Broadway and Silverlake. Parking isn't too crazy yet, so early birding the gem show is a nice option right now. Some gem show sites: http://emol.org/tucson/gemshow/ Tucson Gem and Mineral Society: http://tgms.org Online and printable guides to the different shows: http://www.xpopress.com/AZ-show-schedule.html Quick tip: If you don't mind a bit of a walk and want to see the shows along the frontage road by I-10, try parking anywhere along the Santa Cruz river walk, then walk along the river walkway South past 22nd St, and over to the freeway and the show. Its not a bad bike ride either, though taking a bike thru the crowded tents and hotel rooms could be a problem. "" | add comment |

| 2007-10-14 Visit to Buckelew Farms The Pumpkin Festival & Corn Maze is open to the public weekends thru the end of October. We tried the corn maze without a map - if they didn't post maps at various staions inside the maze we might still be there! Gorgeous draft horse teams pull wagons into the pumpkin patch, where we examined the insect life and chose two pumpkins with character. The petting zoo is run by local 4-H chapters and seems to have inspired my 1st grader that she wants to join a 4-H club. Food was available but we brought our own. Cost of everything else: $4/head to get in, $8 for adults + $6 for 6 and up to do the maze, and a very reasonable 35 cents/pound for the pumpkins. The petting zoo is free but they take donations.
