Report from the Pow-wow

Attended the Native American pow-wow at Rillito Downs last week (Sat Dec 30 2006), kids and adults both enjoyed.  Colorful dances, neat costumes, really the purpose is to preserve and celebrate culture of each Nation but even non-Indian spectators could enjoy the dances.  We especially liked the Fire dance, and the everyone-included circle dance lesson afterwards!  (Luckily we didn't have to do the put-out-a-burning-coal-barefoot part ;-)  "

Talking to those manning the booths, got a recommendation for Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie and I think something called Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews, for kids.

My 5yr old daughter especially liked watching Derek, a 10-yr old accomplished artist, crafting a decorated pot right there at the fair.   He sells online at Nahoni Pottery, I think - will try and dig up the link and put it here.

We'll be back next year!"""
