I wish I'd learned a second language during those sensitive years when it is supposed to be so much easier to pick up! So now with my 2-year old, I've been on the lookout for Spanish learning opportunties. Between the public libraries and Parent Connection, we've made a pretty good start.
The Sam Lena and Quincie Douglas libraries have weekly storytimes en Espaol at 10:30 AM Thursday and 11 AM Wednesday, respectively (see http://tppl.org ). Once the librarian has read us a book in Spanish and explained the translation, it's easier for me to take it home and reread it to my kids. Spanish is an entirely phonetic language, so once you know a few pronunciation rules you can read aloud even if you may not understand all the words!
Then, the Parent Connection, an excellent family resource center, has bilingual family playtimes every Friday. (They also have Sign with your Baby classes - check out their website at http://theparentconnectionaz.org/ ) My daughter loves the play area, toys and songs, and as everyone there is making an effort to interact in Spanish it gives her a chance to practice speaking as well as listening.
More Spanish language resources are likely available from the Tucson International School and other local organizations. If you know of one please add it as a comment to this story! Tucson has such a rich culture with so many opportunities to practice a second language, it would seem a shame not to take advantage of some of them. I hope when my daughter grows up she will be able to say, 'Gracias, Mama, para asegurarse de que pudiera aprender espaol.'

'Is Our Children Learning?' (George W. Bush)
“Is our children learning?” has now become a famous quote by George W. Bush (his exact words). Grammar problems aside, I would like to pose the same question. At first, I was content that in third grade my son is learning to solve simple equations. Here’s an example: More

Conduct a neighborhood energy audit. There are many tools available to help you conduct an energy audit. Learning how your neighborhood uses energy will help you make choices about how to make reductions. Visit the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy website for a guide to conducting a home energy audit or to hire a professional auditor. This process can be applied on a neighborhood scale by collaborating and encouraging participation among neighbors.
Tucson Water—Educational Outreach Programs
A paid internship program, this two-week course introduces middle and high school teachers to water resources management issues facing the community and provides opportunities to interact with utility staff in an educational setting. The internship promotes water-related learning opportunities for all curriculum areas. Graduates will develop water-related projects within classrooms during the school year. For more information about this opportunity, contact Tucson Water 's Public Information Office at (520) 791-4331.
Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) is an opportunity to learn about Arizona's water resources by participating in fun, interactive, classroom-ready activities. The activities, developed and tested by teachers, are designed to develop critical thinking and build an understanding of concepts by experiential learning. Activities cover the properties of water, the water cycle, watersheds, groundwater, water quality, water rights, as well as an understanding of the importance of water to all water users. To attend the next Tucson Water sponsored workshop, contact Project WET Coordinator, Kerry Schwartz at (520) 792-9591 ext. 22.

Sustainability in Government - Energy
Mayor and Council adopted an ordinance April 16, 2006 requiring Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver for all City buildings and renovations 5,000 sq. ft. or larger. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. To date, 10 buildings have been completed or are being designed with a minimum LEED Silver standard, including the Pennington St. Garage and the new Reid Park Zoo Conservation Learning Center which has a pending LEED Platinum Certification.
Sustainability in Government - Green Building
Green building designs often focus on energy efficiency, an area in which the City has been a leader for decades. In the 1990’s, the City developed and adopted the Sustainable Energy Standard (SES) for all new City buildings. In 2006, Mayor and Council adopted a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver or higher rating for all new buildings and any renovations greater than 5,000 sq. ft. The new Conservation Learning Center at Reid Park Zoo achieved the highest LEED standards and has a Platinum rating. These are just some of the steps the City is taking to conserve energy and maximize project design so development meets the needs of the community.
Tucson Clean & Beautiful - Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Environmental Directory: Recycling & Reuse
As technology continues to change rapidly from traditional analog tube-style and projection televisions to newer high-definition and flat-screen technologies, interest continues to grow in learning how to properly reuse and recycle televisions. Expediting this technology change is a federal government mandate that broadcast-television over the airwaves be converted to digital technology by February 2009. Some facts regarding televisions that may aid your technology decisions and potential reuse & disposal options:
City of Tucson - Livable Tucson Vision Program
From Seattle to Jacksonville, communities across the country are starting to define a vision for their future that balances the needs of this generation without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their needs. These "sustainable" cities are learning and demonstrating that balancing the economic, social, and environmental concerns of their communities can improve their quality of life and ensure a better future.

After the recruits's Academy
After a recruit successfully completes training, they are promoted to firefighter and serve 18 months on a probationary status. During probation, firefighters work on regular firefighting crews where training and evaluations are continued to ensure that firefighters keep learning and expanding their skills after recruit graduation. Probationary firefighters are required to successfully complete a series of written and practical exams as well as additional oral board interviews.
Tucson Water—Sweetwater Wetlands
Another important step in helping protect our environment is learning about the plants and animals that live here. For the convenience of visitors to the wetlands, Tucson Water is providing the Sweetwater Wetlands Activity Book and Field Guide. This guide provides information about the water cycle, ecology and conservations as well as photographic descriptions of the mammals, birds, insect, plants and reptiles that inhabit the area. In our desert community, it's not often that we have the chance to see the type of animals and plants that depend on open, flowing water and lush vegetation. To schedule a guided tour, contact Tucson Water at 791-4331. You may also visit our Educational Outreach Programs page for information on other tours available.

Learning Skills Unlimited Train the brain. Get smarter.
Stages of Learning
If your child is having difficulty learning in one of the following ways -
* Learning to read or spell
Let Learning Skills take the guesswork out of finding the right solution.
Your child struggles to learn for a reason. Learning Skills can quickly identify that reason and improve your child's core ability to learn and read. Cognitive training from Learning Skills is so effective that gains can actually be guaranteed.
* Are learning struggles a phase my child will
The Learning Skills training programs get beneath the symptoms of academic struggles and attacks the root problems.
A proper foundation of cognitive skills is essential for effective academic learning. We apply contemporary brain science to train the brain and help kids think, learn and read faster and easier.
This is not academic tutoring, it is foundational skills training. We provide 12-24 weeks of one-on-one training that helps children with learning or reading difficulties attend to and process information. Once strengthened, these skills catapult the student's capacity to learn.
The Master the Code reading program, along with PACE, is designed to correct deficiencies in cognitive learning skills, and rebuild a student's reading system on a sound-to-code foundation. The 18-week program is designed around short but intense training sessions in a one-on-one environment.

* Hands-On Learning
We believe that learning is more meaningful when the emphasis is placed on real world projects which
build upon connections between the classroom content areas. In order to maximize the value of what is
taught in the classroom, students spend a considerable amount of time studying outside of the classroom
through field trips and projects.
