Two recent headlines in other cities are not welcome news for supporters of a publicly owned, 525-room, $170 million Sheraton hotel proposed for downtown Tucson. In September, The Oregonian declared, "Portland Convention Center Hotel Is Dead." In March, Standard and Poor's bond-rating service announced, "Downtown Phoenix Hotel's Outlook Is Revised to Negative." In response to disappointing results during its first year of business—such as operating revenues 19 percent below forecasts—Standard and Poor's changed the outlook for the Phoenix Sheraton hotel's…

2010-04-22 MGMT: Congratulations (Columbia/Sony) (weekly)

        by Sean Bottai

Everything about MGMT's second album is counterintuitive. The album art is weird, a cross between rejected cover art for an early-'90s Sega Genesis game and a DayGlo surfing poster from a head shop. Stylistically, it's a retrospective record whose fealty lies with '60s California pop, classic surf music and late-period Beatles. Oracular Spectacular is one of the past decade's best and most important albums. Part of what's so charming about MGMT is how hard it is to peg them. If…

Jesse Kelly + References to Christ and Wealth = Moron

Jesse Kelly + References to Christ and Wealth = Moron Thanks to Jim Nintzel for exposing the cockamamie tax schemes of the four Republican clowns who are vying to oppose Gabrielle Giffords, and how they would force the rest of us to pay yet again for tax cuts for the rich ("Regressive Direction," April 15). This seems like a good time to recall that Warren Buffett not long ago offered a million dollars to any CEO who could prove that…

KUAT misses fundraising goal; KOLD names new GM; azjazz.net hopes to fill Tucson's jazz-radio void

            by John Schuster

KUAT MISSES FUNDRAISING GOAL The economy has taken its toll on PBS affiliate KUAT Channel 6, which missed its donation target by more than 20 percent during its spring fundraising drive. KUAT raised $264,165, a drop from $309,375 last year. The number of pledges (1,848 in 2010, 2,389 in 2009) slipped by 23 percent, although there was a slight increase in the average amount each donor offered ($129 in 2009, $143 in 2010). KUAT plans to add a fiscal-year-end fundraiser…

Tobey Maguire absolutely nails the role of Sam, an American soldier sent off to fight in Afghanistan. He's reported dead, and his wife, Grace (an incredible Natalie Portman), is left behind with their two children. Sam's younger brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), starts spending time with Grace and the kids, and the adults start…

An old favorite is reintroduced to Tucsonans at the Arizona State Museum

            by Margaret Regan

At the old Mountain Oyster Club building, at Stone Avenue and Franklin Street, a mural painted above the door conjures up old-time Mexican hospitality. Refined ladies in Colonial Mexican dress, complete with full skirts, fans and frilly hats, pose prettily under a painted tree laden with fruit. Well-dressed, well-behaved children sit at their feet. Above the gathering, birds cling to the tree's leafy branches. Below, a painted sign issues an invitation: Siéntese, it reads. Sit down. Make yourself at home.…

This documentary about a Philadelphia art struggle is quite effective, if a bit slanted

            by Bob Grimm

The Art of the Steal makes a damn good argument for having kids if you've amassed a fabulous art collection during your time upon this Earth. The documentary focuses on the fight over the Barnes Foundation, an arboretum and educational facility in a Philadelphia suburb that houses one of the world's most incredible art collections. There have been many efforts to move this collection to a more modern, publicly accessible facility since the foundation's founder, Albert C. Barnes, passed away…

Etcetera's surprisingly enjoyable 'White People' brings nuance to racial conflict

            by Nathan Christensen

An unexpected contradiction lies at the heart of White People, the current offering from Live Theatre Workshop's late-night Etcetera series. Contradiction isn't surprising in a play about white people confronting race. As they trip over what they feel (or shouldn't feel), or even what's acceptable to talk about, these characters sometimes struggle just to get a sentence out. The real surprise is that the play is enjoyable and engaging to watch, despite its thorny subject matter, the characters' sometimes despicable…

If you've seen the Avett Brothers perform live before, you might as well skip to the next item, as you've likely already bought your tickets for Friday night's show at the Rialto Theatre. If you haven't, listen up real quick: Go. Buy your tickets now. They're not cheap, but they're worth it—and the show just may sell out. If all you know about the Avetts—essentially, a folk-rock band that uses banjo, cello and piano, in addition to guitar,…

Some random acts of stupidity that have recently occurred in our lovely city: • Fast-food giveaways at the gym. LA Fitness allowed a fast-food place to give out free eats to gym-goers at the Park Place Mall location last week. And by "eats," I mean hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches. Look ... I work in a fairly high-stress, low-physical-activity job (unless you count taking calls from deranged conspiracy theorists to be physical activity), and I am trying hard to…

            by Will Ferguson

After spending more than 30 years studying mold, pollen and indoor pollutants, Dr. Mark Sneller has garnered a reputation as one of the nation's leading indoor-air experts. In 1979, Sneller started Aero-Allergen Research, an indoor-air-quality company here in Tucson. Sneller recently published Greener Cleaner Indoor Air; the book explains that exposure to toxic substances indoors is five to 10 times greater than exposure outdoors. (Side note: With this interview, he becomes one of only a handful of people to get…

UA journalism students balance the desire for border-reporting experience with safety concerns

            by Tim Vanderpool

You can't see Mexico from the Louise Foucar Marshall Building. But you feel it every day in this enclave of the UA Journalism Department. Prodded by nervous campus administrators, journalism professors have ratcheted up their warnings to students about working in Mexico—a cautionary stance that sometimes strains the boundary between necessary reportage and excess caution. For associate professor Maggy Zanger—whose profession has taken her to hotspots such as Iraq, where she ran the Institute for War and Peace Reporting—putting a…

Shearwater is back with a new album that's best listened to as a whole

            by Eric Swedlund

From Lost to Cast Away to Robinson Crusoe to The Odyssey, islands have played out in human stories and art as meditations on journeys, discovery and how people respond to the frightful unknown. The title and deeply evocative cover art of Shearwater's new record, The Golden Archipelago, not to mention the expansively spooky music, signal a new exploration on those ancient themes. "Islands figure so much in people's imaginations, but they're very fragile in the real world and subject to…

If you don’t pass this sales tax, we’ll kill this state

            by The Weekly Editorial Board

Let us begin by saying we're not crazy about hiking the state's sales tax by a penny per dollar for the next three years. But we're a lot less crazy about the alternative, so we're urging you to vote yes. The state of Arizona is facing its most serious economic crisis in modern history. The Republicans running our state have already stripped health-care coverage from more than 300,000 people below the federal poverty line. They have made Arizona the only…
