I wonder if the Tucson Poetry Festival considered an Al Valenzuela-style commerical for their spring fundraiser: "Do you like poetry? I mean do you really like poetry?"

On Friday, Feb. 11, these poetry peeps are serving up Salsa and Tequila, 7 p.m. at 1336 E. 12th St., between Highland and Park, south of Broadway.…

Suddenly, the bag of gummi bears I bought at Walgreens seems so dated and sad.

2011-02-09 How Do You Like Your iPhone Now, Verizon Fans? (weekly)
http://www.tucsonweekly.com/TheRange/archives/2011/02/08/how-do-you-like-your-iphone-now-verizon-fans

After hearing from every AT&T hater (and I get it, they are a lousy provider) that the Verizon iPhone was going to be brought down from smartphone heaven by angels and unicorns, I found an odd sense of satisfaction from Verizon essentially pulling the same tricks to preserve their bandwidth:

The launch of the iPhone on Verizon adds to the mountain of evidence that you just can’t trust wireless carriers.

On the day that iPhone preorders began last week, Verizon quietly revised its policy on data management: Any smartphone customer who uses an “extraordinary amount of data” will see a slowdown in their data-transfer speeds for the remainder of the month and the next billing cycle.…

American Friends Service Committee, its partners and volunteers plan a legislative delegation and press conference on the Arizona Capitol House Lawn on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m., to remind lawmakers that prison privatization is a bad investment.

From the press release:

In the same week that one of the Kingman escapees went to New Mexico to face murder charges, the state of Arizona re-issued an RFP for 5,000 more private prison beds.…

2011-02-09 Missouri's Battle Over Puppy Mills (weekly)

Only half joking, I'm a little afraid to post this, because I think the Arizona Legislature will move to try to pick up the leftover puppy mill business Missouri is leaving behind. The Week Magazine has an interesting round-up the balance between responsible dog breeders and those less concerned with animal welfare:

An estimated 30 percent of all puppies sold in America come from Missouri — a whopping 750,000 dogs each year — earning the Show Me State a new unwanted, unofficial title: The "Puppy Mill State."…
