I wish I'd learned a second language during those sensitive years when it is supposed to be so much easier to pick up! So now with my 2-year old, I've been on the lookout for Spanish learning opportunties. Between the public libraries and Parent Connection, we've made a pretty good start.

The Sam Lena and Quincie Douglas libraries have weekly storytimes en Espa�ol at 10:30 AM Thursday and 11 AM Wednesday, respectively (see http://tppl.org ). Once the librarian has read us a book in Spanish and explained the translation, it's easier for me to take it home and reread it to my kids. Spanish is an entirely phonetic language, so once you know a few pronunciation rules you can read aloud even if you may not understand all the words!

Then, the Parent Connection, an excellent family resource center, has bilingual family playtimes every Friday. (They also have Sign with your Baby classes - check out their website at http://theparentconnectionaz.org/ ) My daughter loves the play area, toys and songs, and as everyone there is making an effort to interact in Spanish it gives her a chance to practice speaking as well as listening.

More Spanish language resources are likely available from the Tucson International School and other local organizations. If you know of one please add it as a comment to this story! Tucson has such a rich culture with so many opportunities to practice a second language, it would seem a shame not to take advantage of some of them. I hope when my daughter grows up she will be able to say, 'Gracias, Mama, para asegurarse de que pudiera aprender espa�ol.'
