Video of her interview with the BBC She is not out of danger, however, warns Tom Malinowski, head of the Washington office of Human Rights Watch. The Washington Post reports that Malinowski said he is worried that as she carries out her vow to reengage politically, she will be on a collision course with the government of Senior Gen. Than Shwe. | 2011-08-29 Burma update - watchful optimism? http://www.dvb.no/news/suu-kyi-encouraged-by-quintana-meet/17267 August is the anniversary month of the 8-8-88 uprisings and more recently the 8/2007 repression of the monks and other democracy protestors. Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the democracy movement, has been free from house arrest since November. She sounded optimistic after her first meeting with president Thein Sein last week: "From my point of view, I think the president wants to achieve real positive change." Thein Sein took office last March. Suu Kyi also was able to meet with United Nations Human Rights Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana for the first time - previously he had been prevented from seeing her by the regime. "I am really satisfied. I am encouraged to have seen him as he is an expert in this issue (human rights)." However, according to Suu Kyi's facebook page, 2200 p ...read more... | add comment |

| 2007-10-14 Chevron and Burma As I understand it, Chevron is co-financing development of an oil field controlled by the Myanmar dictators, and which funds their military crackdown. Now they are confiscating satellite phones. The Burma govt seems to think that if we don't see images of the oppression, we will forget about it. Please prove them wrong. Several blog sites are suggesting sending emails to comments@chevron.com addressed to David O'Reilly, the chairman. I think it would be more effective if we can find direct contact info for the individuals on the board of directors. They are listed here http://www.chevron.com/about/leadership/boardofdirectors/ and below. Please post any contact information you find for these individuals: * David J. | 2007-10-23 Found the house bill: support HR3890 I talked to a staffer for the committee on foreign affairs, who explained to me that the house hasn't started anything equivalent to McCain's "Saffron Revolution Support Bill" [S 2172] because it might be perceived as competing with that bill; the idea is that house members who support the Senate bill will wait for it to pass before introducing it in the house. So I did the other thing the staffer suggested, and searched http://thomas.loc.gov - and the guy's boss, Rep Tom Lantos, did in fact introduce a good bill, one with at least some teeth: the Block Burmese JADE (Junta's Anti-Democratic Efforts) Act of 2007, HR 3890. Thomas.loc.gov is weird and doesn't provide static links to bills, so you will have to search for it there if you want to read it. Basically it tightens up the impo ...read more... | add comment |
| 2007-10-09 Free Burma Report & Strategy http://uscampaignforburma.org We had a really neat day at the park talking to people about the situation in Burma. I was surprised that some folks were not that aware, while others discussed with us whether or not there was really anything we can do to be effective. We sent 24 handmade postcards with photos of the horrorible acts by the Myanmar government to various officials, but more than that we educated ourselves and each other. This is really the time of greatest hope for a free Burma in decades, and if the international community keeps the pressure on there is some hope for the brave protesters who are now in prison. See the bottom of this article for some addresses to send letters to. I asked Thelma from the http://uscampaignforburma.org what our strategy should be at this point. | 2010-06-30 McCain sponsors resolution to renew Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act http://uscampaignforburma.org This year is important to send a message to the Myanmar regime that they have not legitimized their brutal government. Sens McCain and Kyl are both co-sponsors of Joint Resolution 29 to renew the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act. So it is not necessary to lobby our senators, but an easy step to take is to lobby President Obama to support the investigation of the regimes war crimes and crimes against humanity: http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1189/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=2660 For information about the senate resolution see: http://uscampaignforburma.org/call-senate-burma-2010 To find out how else to support the campaign to free Burma, please visit http://uscampaignforburma.org/ August 8 will be the anniversary of the uprising. | 2009-07-21 Next Steps on Burma - need your help! http://uscampaignforburma.org/support-a-commission-of-inquiry-for-burma Momentum has begun to demand the UN form an Commission of Inquiry on Burma. Its a slow process, but this is the first step towards getting security council action to stop the atrocities and human rights abuses in Burma. Please make a call, most of our Arizona congressmen have not signed yet. I think Raul and Gabby and Pastor would sign if their attention is drawn to it, probably others as well. If you haven't been following recently, please know that the Myanmar government has continued to burn and destroy ethnic villages, torture dissidents, and now has imprisoned probably one of the bravest women of our time, Aung San Suu Kyi. The reason no action has been taken is that China gets a lot of oil from Burma. So its slow work, but we can get something to happen if we keep at it. ...read more... | add comment |
| 2010-08-22 Oil Thugs If armed robbers took over your house at gunpoint, could they then sell it to your neighbor? Not in any country under rule of law. International law, it seems, is much weaker. The Burmese people elected a legitimate government. It is led by Aung San Suu Kyi, now in her 14th year of house arrest. James Mawdsley in The Iron Road points out "The oil in Burma belongs to the people of Burma, and if [oil companies such as Premier Oil or Chevron] want to deal in it, then they should pay the representatives of the people of Burma = the National League for Democracy. But to pay instead a group of armed thugs who use the money to oppress the country is wicket. From the legal perspective it is dealing in stolen goods. "From the economic perspective it is idiocy. | 2007-10-23 So what is Congress gonna do? http://mccain.senate.gov/press_office/view_article.cfm?ID=1146 I just read that McCain has sponsored a bill titled 'Saffron Revolution Support Act' that does some of the things that need to be done - close the loopholes so Chevron has to get out, get some sanctions with teeth in them and send aid to the democratic opposition. So, I called his office to find out what we can do to support the bill. Unfortunately, both Sen. McCain and Sen. Kyl's staff are still in the pre-Internet age. All they will do is take your mailing address to send you a postcard. Sigh. When I called Congressman Grijalva, I got the email address of a staffer who is focused on foriegn affairs, and advice on who might be the lead in the house (Tom Lantos). But, McCain is the one taking the lead and doing the right thing right now in the Senate. Kyl did NOT cosponsor the ...read more... | add comment |

| 2007-11-14 Urgent: Stop US Congress From Sitting on Hands After Burma Crackdown http://uscampaignforburma.org [from the US Campaign for Burma] We are writing to ask for your urgent help. It has now been nearly two months since the Burmese military regime's brutal crackdown on peacefully demonstrations. Yet, the US Congress has not yet responded with concrete action. Congressmen Lantos (D-CA) and Peter King (R-NY) and others in the US House of Representatives introduced legislation that would cut off industries such as gems, that area a major cashflow to the regime, as well as targeted banking sanctions which will severely impact the generals. The legislation is still sitting, waiting, in the House of Representatives' Ways and Means Committee because the committee has been busy with other matters. In order to stop Burma's regime from profiting off the sale of gems, the Committee and S ...read more... | add comment |
| 2010-08-22 What do Barack Obama and Mitch McConnell agree on? Very little - but both can agree on the need for freedom in Burma. "What's important here is that this is not aimed at the people of Burma but at its leadership, particularly at Than Shwe," said a senior administration official quoted in The Washington Post And McConnell? He urged the Obama administration to do just what it did: "“Although the Burmese junta will characterize the charade it announced today as an election–an exercise that only the junta considers meaningful–November 7, 2010 will be just another day in Burma, marked by continued government oppression and hardship for its people. I urge President Obama to renew his support for Aung San Suu Kyi and pro-democracy forces wit ...read more... | add comment |
