2011-07-13 "I just didn't have my hand on the trigger" - Pointing a gun is a crime
Az state senator Lori Klein pointed a gun at a reporter who was questioning her views on gun control.
This is aggravated assault under ARS 13-1203: "2. Intentionally placing another person in reasonable apprehension of imminent physical injury; " and ARS-12041
If a gunsight on one's chest doesn't cause " reasonable apprehension of imminent physical injury.", I'm not sure what does.
Some states have specific laws regarding pointing guns. In North Carolina: "If any person shall point any gun or pistol at any person, either in fun or otherwise, whether such gun or pistol be loaded or not loaded, he shall be guilty of a Class A1 misdemeanor."
The 9th circuit has ruled that " Pointing a gun at a person can ...read more...

2011-07-04 American History Quiz: Which founding father leaked documents that triggered the start of the American Revolution?
From 1773 to 2011, leaking incriminating documents into the public eye has been a powerful mechanism to galvanize revolutions.
Nothing quite like reading in black and white the recommendation for "abridgement of what are called English liberties".
Benjamin Franklin leaked Royal Governor Hutchinson's letters to the press back in 1773, triggering the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution. (Franklin was actually trying to focus anger on a local governor instead of Britain - but once the truth is out, people act on it in their own way. After this affair and the British response to it Franklin gave up on reconciliation with England and became a revolutionary himself.)

2011-06-06 Arizona Leaders: Interview with Randy Parraz
In November 2010, ultra-conservative state senator Russell Pearce received 17552 votes to be re-elected to the Arizona legislature from District 18 in Mesa, AZ. In May 2011, 18300 voters in the same district signed a petition for him to be recalled.
We interviewed Randy Parraz, who led the recall effort. His voice was a little raspy after talking to thousands of voters, and the day after turning in the petitions he sounded a little tired, but took time to talk to us bright and early June 1 and explain how this turnaround came about.
bTuc: So this was a big day for Arizona?
Parraz: The biggest ...finally coming together...people are tired of the divisive politics, they want to see a difference and a change now and not wait for 2012.

Start our State is a serious effort by Arizonans who are more than fed up with the Tucson-bashing, immigrant-bashing, and general citizen-bashing that goes on up in Phoenix. Whether or not Baja Arizona becomes a reality, the Start our State website and Facebook page appear to have some momentum and organization going. At the least, its a friendly place for like-minded Southern Arizonans to sound off.

Even picking a technical consultant to perform the mapping was fraught with political overtones: "In fact, it seems it is in the very nature of this kind of technical work that, over the course of a career, a firm has partisan affiliations themselves and is hired by partisans or partisan officeholders to do the kind of work that they do."

Polls are open today from 6AM to 7PM
Here is a full listing of all Primary candidates:
Republicans need to pick a candidate for US Senate; Democrats have Richard Carmona, former US Surgeon General. Every congressional district has at least one contested primary, as well as several of the legislative districts for state senate.
Primaries are generally low turnout - which means your vote counts proportionately that much more.
2011-10-03 Grinnell wants to be mayor - but his board is suing the city
Rick Grinnell is running for mayor of Tucson. He is also a member of the governor-appointed Rio Nuevo board, which has just decided to sue the City of Tucson for upwards of $40Million.
That means more cuts to police, more closed pools, more cuts to parks and rec services, more 911 problems. Why would someone who wants to run the city be involved in something so damaging to the city?
The suit is over property, that the Rio Nuevo board would like the City of Tucson to sign over to them. This voter would like our Tucson land NOT to be controlled by a board appointed by Phoenix politicians. It is extremely hard to contact anyone except Grinnell on the Rio Nuevo board, as their contact information is not public. Walking through Military Plaza park this afternoon, a small rally was in progress and I had a chance to talk to one of the volunteers for the campaign to Recall Jan Brewer. |2009-03-20 Open letter to the Arizona Legislature : Rio Nuevo belongs to Tucson and we will fix it! |
Please do not destroy our hopes for the Rio Nuevo original vision, voted for and approved in 1999. I have told my children we will be getting an aquarium and new museum downtown, and I am willing to do whatever it takes as a citizen to make that happen. If you are looking for volunteers for an oversight committee I will be happy to help, but do NOT think that you can redirect money voted for a theatre, museum and aquarium into a hotel for out of towners just because you choose. The voters endorsed this project as our vision of Tucson, not as a money-making strategy.

The first draft of the redistricting maps are done. By law, the redistricting commission has to start from scratch every 10 years, drawing maps based on population and other factors without consideration for existing political boundaries.
According to the commission website, these first draft maps take into account only equal population and compactness/contiguousness.
Next, the commission will modify them for four factors:

Thanks Howard Fischer. I was looking for a reason we need independent reporting in Arizona, and your article "AZ court: Governor wrong on dismissal" just provided it.
Sure, your facts are there, the what and when: four months later, the court explained their reasoning for not allowing Gov. Brewer to pop out Colleen Mathis, chairman of the independent redistricting commission. But you skipped the big 'why?' - why does Brewer want so badly to remove Mathis? Is it really because she believes Mathis has neglected her duties in some technical way? Why is independent redistricting so important?

2012-11-06 The Most Important Election Of Them All
An Opinion Piece
by Ken Larsen
Every four years, the people and the punditry of this land piously
assert that that particular presidential polling is the big one, the ultimate
decider of our nation’s fate, the true history-maker, the most important
election of our time. An irony, to be sure, as typically each election fades in
our consciousness shortly after, replaced entirely in significance by the
upcoming one, the one that will really change and affect our lives forever.
As for myself, I have watched many presidential elections come and go;
some were painful, some uplifting, some more interesting than others. But
now we are on the cusp of yet another, and the nation is energized. Many
shout out that this is it—the big one, the Moment of Truth, the ultimate

More teacher layoffs and incredibly hurtful cuts, more closures of neighborhood schools. Our kids pay for his political crap.
And then he has the gall to say on his website: "The paradigm shift, since I took office is that the Department of Education will be primarily a service organization, helping school districts and charter schools achieve more academic success. The Department is also an organization that assures compliance, and we will have to be conscientious about that, but the compliance function will be secondary. The primary fun ...read more...

You can take the reins and see how to do it - take the Federal Budget Challenge: http://www.federalbudgetchallenge.org/budget_challenge/sim/budget_master.html
NextTen and the Concord Coalition have created an interactive budget simulation. It takes only about 5 minutes but makes one think carefully about the choices we have in front of us. When I did the simulation I wound up with a deficit of 12 Trillion - and that was with raising taxes on the wealthy and significant cuts ! Without those choices, our current deficit outlook is 14.4 Trillion. (5.6T of that is interest on the debt, which is part of what makes it hard to balance the budget - just like credit card borrowing)"
