This is aggravated assault under ARS 13-1203: "2. Intentionally placing another person in reasonable apprehension of imminent physical injury; " and ARS-12041 If a gunsight on one's chest doesn't cause " reasonable apprehension of imminent physical injury.", I'm not sure what does. | 2011-07-04 American History Quiz: Which founding father leaked documents that triggered the start of the American Revolution? From 1773 to 2011, leaking incriminating documents into the public eye has been a powerful mechanism to galvanize revolutions. Nothing quite like reading in black and white the recommendation for "abridgement of what are called English liberties". Benjamin Franklin leaked Royal Governor Hutchinson's letters to the press back in 1773, triggering the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution. (Franklin was actually trying to focus anger on a local governor instead of Britain - but once the truth is out, people act on it in their own way. After this affair and the British response to it Franklin gave up on reconciliation with England and became a revolutionary himself.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutchinson_Letters_Affair The Remarkable Benjamin Franklin by Cheryl ...read more... | add comment |
| 2011-08-09 Arizona Divided by Golda Velez "I have never been so active before in my life" Elizabeth Savino is a small business owner from the midwest, not a political activist. But the Mesa resident spent weekend after weekend volunteering with the effort to recall the ultra-conservative Az state senator Russell Pearce. Becky H's hands trembled after speaking up at a public meeting in support of the Ethnic studies program. "I don't like to speak in public." But she did it, because the program had meant so much to her daughter. If the Tea Party in Arizona is full of angry people, the 'Coffee Party' - the heterogeneous collection of volunteers and organizers who are opposed to right-wingers such as Russell Pearce - se ...read more... | add comment |
| 2011-06-06 Arizona Leaders: Interview with Randy Parraz In November 2010, ultra-conservative state senator Russell Pearce received 17552 votes to be re-elected to the Arizona legislature from District 18 in Mesa, AZ. In May 2011, 18300 voters in the same district signed a petition for him to be recalled. We interviewed Randy Parraz, who led the recall effort. His voice was a little raspy after talking to thousands of voters, and the day after turning in the petitions he sounded a little tired, but took time to talk to us bright and early June 1 and explain how this turnaround came about. bTuc: So this was a big day for Arizona?
Parraz: The biggest ...finally coming together...people are tired of the divisive politics, they want to see a difference and a change now and not wait for 2012.

| 2011-03-30 Baja Arizona! Start our State website launched http://startourstate.com Start our State is a serious effort by Arizonans who are more than fed up with the Tucson-bashing, immigrant-bashing, and general citizen-bashing that goes on up in Phoenix. Whether or not Baja Arizona becomes a reality, the Start our State website and Facebook page appear to have some momentum and organization going. | 2011-07-05 Being the balance point http://azredistricting.org/docs/Meeting-Info/Mathis-Comments-062911.pdf Colleen Mathis has the delicate job of being the independent chairman of the Independent Redistricting Commission. Mathis describes her colleagues as "an outstanding group of dedicated Arizonans who sometimes have principled and heartfelt differences." Hm - would you want to be the leader of such a group? Even picking a technical consultant to perform the mapping was fraught with political overtones: "In fact, it seems it is in the very nature of this kind of technical work that, over the course of a career, a firm has partisan affiliations themselves and is hired by partisans or partisan officeholders to do the kind of work that they do." | 2011-10-03 Grinnell wants to be mayor - but his board is suing the city Rick Grinnell is running for mayor of Tucson. He is also a member of the governor-appointed Rio Nuevo board, which has just decided to sue the City of Tucson for upwards of $40Million. That means more cuts to police, more closed pools, more cuts to parks and rec services, more 911 problems. Why would someone who wants to run the city be involved in something so damaging to the city? The suit is over property, that the Rio Nuevo board would like the City of Tucson to sign over to them. This voter would like our Tucson land NOT to be controlled by a board appointed by Phoenix politicians. It is extremely hard to contact anyone except Grinnell on the Rio Nuevo board, as their contact information is not public. | 2011-04-04 Moderate Republicans support Recall Jan Brewer campaign http://www.recallgovernorbrewer.com Walking through Military Plaza park this afternoon, a small rally was in progress and I had a chance to talk to one of the volunteers for the campaign to Recall Jan Brewer. It seems the campaign was started by a Republican! And when the volunteer was making her calls asking for support, she mentioned this fact. The woman on the other end started laughing - "I'm a republican too, and I can't stand that woman. I'm going to tell all my republican friends!" | 2009-03-20 Open letter to the Arizona Legislature : Rio Nuevo belongs to Tucson and we will fix it! Dear legislators Please do not destroy our hopes for the Rio Nuevo original vision, voted for and approved in 1999. I have told my children we will be getting an aquarium and new museum downtown, and I am willing to do whatever it takes as a citizen to make that happen. If you are looking for volunteers for an oversight committee I will be happy to help, but do NOT think that you can redirect money voted for a theatre, museum and aquarium into a hotel for out of towners just because you choose. The voters endorsed this project as our vision of Tucson, not as a money-making strategy. The Arizona legislature does not have the right to re-design Tucson or to override the will of the voters. If it takes a few years longer, in the long run that doesn't matter. But re-directing th ...read more... | add comment |

Brewer to pop out Colleen Mathis, chairman of the independent redistricting commission. But you skipped the big 'why?' - why does Brewer want so badly to remove Mathis? It takes only about 5 minutes but makes one think carefully about the choices we have in front of us. When I did the simulation I wound up with a deficit of 12 Trillion - and that was with raising taxes on the wealthy and significant cuts ! Without those choices, our current deficit outlook is 14.4 Trillion.
