2011-07-13 "I just didn't have my hand on the trigger" - Pointing a gun is a crime
http://www.arizonaguardian.com/azg/index.php?option=com_jcs&view=jcs&layout=form&Itemid=108
Az state senator Lori Klein pointed a gun at a reporter who was questioning her views on gun control.

This is aggravated assault under ARS 13-1203: "2. Intentionally placing another person in reasonable apprehension of imminent physical injury; " and ARS-12041

If a gunsight on one's chest doesn't cause " reasonable apprehension of imminent physical injury.", I'm not sure what does.

Some states have specific laws regarding pointing guns.  In North Carolina: "If any person shall point any gun or pistol at any person, either in fun or otherwise, whether such gun or pistol be loaded or not loaded, he shall be guilty of a Class A1 misdemeanor."

2011-08-16 Redistricting Moving Ahead
http://www.azredistricting.org/Maps/default.asp
The first draft of the redistricting maps are done.  By law, the redistricting commission has to start from scratch every 10 years, drawing maps based on population and other factors without consideration for existing political boundaries.

According to the commission website, these first draft maps take into account only equal population and compactness/contiguousness.

Next, the commission will modify them for four factors:
  •   Compliance with the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act;

  • Respect for communities of interest;

  • Incorporation of visible geographic features, including city, town and county boundaries, as well as undivided census tracts; and

  • Creation of competitive districts where there is no significant detriment to other goals.

2012-04-22 Redistricting commission: Its not just a legal question
http://btucson.com/Tucson/Politics%20&%20Government//194163#bajaaz

Thanks Howard Fischer.  I was looking for a reason we need independent reporting in Arizona, and your article "AZ court: Governor wrong on dismissal" just provided it.

Sure, your facts are there, the what and when: four months later, the court explained their reasoning for not allowing Gov. Brewer to pop out Colleen Mathis, chairman of the independent redistricting commission.  But you skipped the big 'why?' - why does Brewer want so badly to remove Mathis?   Is it really because she believes Mathis has neglected her duties in some technical way?  Why is independent redistricting so important?

Anyone attending the meetings of the Rio Nuevo Board is welcome to post comments here.

This document has some expenditure details:
http://cms3.tucsonaz.gov/docs/FY09_Inception_to_date_expenditures(1).pdf

Appears approx $11M operating expenses and $194M purchases/development expenses are reported.  I'm curious where the Science Center 7.7M went to?  Was this all for design, or do we have anything on the ground?

2009-11-29 STOP corrupt bankers!!
Come out and voice your opposition to corrupt bankers who ruined our national economy and are ripping us off by enslaving Americans to perpetual debt.
No terrorists could have had such a devastating impact on our Nation as they have had. They are worse than terrorists and they are the real enemy!!
Bank of America is by far the worst of the bunch. Just google "Bank of America Complaints" and see how people have been treated by this pathetic corporate greed machine.
Bankers must be pressured to clean up their act and do honest business with people instead of being allowed to conduct themselves with unrestrained, unscrupulous, predatory schemes to rip off everyone to the fullest extent. They have screwed up the housing market and the entire American economy because of their endless need fo ...read more...

Fireworks that explode or shoot up into the air are NOT legal to be sold or used by private individuals in Tucson; sparklers, or other devices that produce sparks but do not explode, are now legal to sell and use in Arizona.

Here are all the senators emails in a convenient format to send an email message to all Az State Senators.  Tell them we will not put up with more attempts to gerrymander Arizona's districts.  Voters pick representatives - representatives do NOT get to pick their voters!

The 21 Republican senators have been supporting Brewer's ploy to replace Colleen Mathis with a political puppet.  If just two of them bow out, they will have less than a 2/3 majority.

2010-12-31 Tom Horne makes me sick
He is sacrificing our children, schools and teachers to his political ambition.  He gets political points for his grandstanding on 'raza' classes and assertion that he can micromanage our teachers from the highest level at the state.  What do we get?  More teacher layoffs and incredibly hurtful cuts, more closures of neighborhood schools.  Our kids pay for his political crap.

And then he has the gall to say on his website: "The paradigm shift, since I took office is that the Department of Education will be primarily a service organization, helping school districts and charter schools achieve more academic success. The Department is also an organization that assures compliance, and we will have to be conscientious about that, but the compliance function will be secondary. The primary fun ...read more...

2011-07-14 Try Balancing the Budget Yourself!
http://www.federalbudgetchallenge.org/budget_challenge/sim/budget_master.html
You can take the reins and see how to do it - take the Federal Budget Challenge: http://www.federalbudgetchallenge.org/budget_challenge/sim/budget_master.html

NextTen and the Concord Coalition have created an interactive budget simulation.  It takes only about 5 minutes but makes one think carefully about the choices we have in front of us.  When I did the simulation I wound up with a deficit of 12 Trillion  - and that was with raising taxes on the wealthy and significant cuts !  Without those choices, our current deficit outlook is 14.4 Trillion.   (5.6T of that is interest on the debt, which is part of what makes it hard to balance the budget - just like credit card borrowing)"

2011-05-02 What Can a Mayor Do for Tucson?
Quite a bit, according to Jonathan Rothschild, the Democratic candidate apparent.  Rothschild, currently a $295/hr attorney, intends to drop out of his law practice and dedicate his 12-hour workdays to 'doing whatever it takes' to make Tucson thrive.

We interviewed Rothschild from broad strokes to brass tacks.  He's articulate, well-researched, and can think on his feet.  My kids also thought he was genuinely decent, and they are pretty tough on fakes.

bTucson: Let's start with some general background - you've done lots of work with nonprofits, had you some interaction with political figures during that time?  What triggered your run for mayor?
