2009-01-18 A Dialog on Israel/Palestinian issue
I am a secular, American Jew - no less Jewish than an Orthodox Jew or an Israeli Jew, mind you, but with a growing feeling of discomfort.  In particular I'm very put off by many Jewish writers, especially orthodox ones, who seem to feel they 'own' Judiasm and are somehow positioned to judge others by virtue of their orthodoxy.  I have a lot more to say on that subject, but later.

More immediately, there is Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and what is and has been going on there for the last 60-some years.   On the one hand I'm acutely aware of the Holocaust, the fact that we Jews had nowhere to go, no place that would welcome us, and desparately needed our own country with something like defensible borders.  On the other hand I love inclusive institutions and groups, I believe strongly in eq ...read more...

"We're in there one day and we ...they ran us out of there, they shut us down and would not let us back in there.  We don't know how many turtles got caught up and just burnt....Once the turtles are in there they can't get out."

I became aware of this from a Moveon alert.  Stephen Biel says:

"With BP already facing so much public outrage, we can stop this. Our friends at Credo Mobile launched a petition demanding that BP stop burning
turtles alive, and you can add your name by clicking the link below:

I seem to find out most important stuff from http://Moveon.org.  I don't agree with them on everything but they have pretty good judgement when something needs more attention.

Its not entirely clear, but it seems that this whole crisis center photo may have been taken in 2001, and just doctored for the 2010 spill.  See the details here http://www.americablog.com/2010/07/bp-photoshops-fake-photo-of-command.html and see what you think.

Openness and honesty are overdue here.  We need BP to get out of the bunker mentality and do a thorough cleaning inside as well as in the ocean."

Kids would probably be horrified if they knew how the meat in their school lunches was treated when it was alive.  Care2 has what seems to me a reasonable petition for requiring that government purchased animal products meet minimal humane standards: the animal should have enough space to stand up, turn around, and lay down.  A chicken should be able to stretch out both wings - as our chickens often want to do.

Care2 has a number of causes and petitions, some I agree with and some not, but this one seems a straightforward 'yes' to me.

"Save the Internet" may sound a bit alarmist, but Net Neutrality is an important principle to stand behind.  Basically, it says that big providers do not have a right to poke into the content of your messages and selectively let some of them thru faster.

Industry lobbyists are trying to kill FCC efforts to protect net neutrality, and it seems that two of our congresspeople who otherwise do a decent job have signed on to the industry-drafted letter.

Take a look here https://secure.freepress.net/site/SPageNavigator/NN_members and please give Giffords and Pastor a call urging them to support Net Neutrality and drop their sponsorship of the FCC letter they signed.
