2007-07-10 Eating there for 43+ years
Well, Being a long time Tucson resident that is currently residing in Indonesia, Karichimaka is my FIRST stop when I get to Tucson (its between my house and the airport. No, kidding, I stop there first.
I can first remember eating at Karichimaka in 1964. My father worked at Hughes and it was a popular Friday lunch spot.
Regarding the food:
I have eaten Mexican (and what people call Mexican) food in many, many places. The cheese crisps at Karichimaka are the best I've ever had. The carne seca one is a meal in itself. The guacamole is also first rate.
The soups I've had are the Caldo de Queso and the Caldillo de Carne Seca. Both are very good, but they are very filling and put a serious dent in your appetite for an entre.
For most people that are familiar with Karichimaka, the Chili rellanos are the signatire dish. Just the right amount of batter and cheese. Try the #11 combo.
The flauta combo is excellent with beans, rice, guacamole and three flautas (chicken or beef).
I could wax poetic for a long time about the entre's, but I'll cut it short.
The dessert top of the list is the Flan (Mary Ann makes it fresh daily) and the Margarita pie.
The prices are reasonable with a dinner for four with cheese crisp, a small pitcher of beer, 3 soft drinks, 4 entres and 2 desserts running around $50.
Just as an aside, Karichimaka uses no pork products and is at least Halal and maybe Kosher.
The only down side to Karichimaka is that on occassion the service can be slow. Especially if a large group comes in before 5 pm. The evening shift isn't on yet and there's generally only two wait persons at that time.
Also, they do not serve hard liquor. So, if you want to do Tequilla shots, you're out of luck.
I just hope they are around for another 43 years!
Cheers!" --guest
