However, that wasn't enough to make me decide to send my older girls there. We looked at test scores - Paulo Freire beat all other schools in the area, and had better ratings at the Great Schools website than all others in a 5 mile radius. The first couple of days of school we had advisory a lot (advisory is a place where there are about 10-16 kids and we have a time for bonding). We also have math, science, and humanities/writing. All the teachers at pffs are awesome and they teach us so much! Before I went to pffs I thought math was boring and that I was really bad at it now I think it’s really fun. Well-intentioned though the book fair staff and volunteers are, what a message. "We don't know if you're gonna steal" I don't want to give the name of the school. Its a typical middle school in a so-so neighborhood; and the reason for the statement was that kids had been stealing items from the book fair that morning. But what kind of a teachable moment does that make? I think back to a different school, a local parent co-op preschool-kindergarten where all the parents volunteer and get to know one another. Kids do come in with behaviours that need correcting: hitting, pushing, even biting - but ah - this preschool, Tucson Community School, has wisdom and patience.
