During the late 1980s, the UST system was found to have leaked an unknown amount of fuel into the soil below the fueling tanks, dispensers, and delivery piping. The tanks were emptied and removed from service in the early 1990's. The City, through its consultants, determined the extent of soil/groundwater impacts. With the approval of the surrounding neighborhood associations and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), Environmental Services Engineering & Technical Support determined the most effective method of remediation. The 1994 Bond Program allocated $4,500,000 for the design and construction of the soil/groundwater Remedial Action System. All work is completed under the oversight of ADEQ.

Tucson Water—Water Quality Terms and Definitions
The temperature of the water delivered by Tucson Water can vary depending on the time of year and the location where the measurement is taken. Part of the reason for this variability is that our water supply comes from more than 200 different wells, and groundwater temperature is a function of depth below the surface and the geology surrounding the well. The temperature of the water can also change as it flows through our drinking water system, depending on outside temperatures. The water at your tap can be 85 degrees or higher and can be affected by your private plumbing. Water temperature can affect the taste of your drinking water. Storing tap water in a clean container at room temperature or in the refrigerator will give a more refreshing taste.

Twenty-three percent of newcomer households moved here to accept a new job. Leading states of origin are Arizona, California, Foreign/APO/FPO (military addressing), New Mexico, Illinois, Texas, Nevada, and Washington. Half of our newcomers arrive during the summer. Newly retired migrants have more education and higher incomes than do current residents. Numerically, Phoenix leads as a source of in-migrants; Los Angeles is second; and Cochise County, Arizona (located east of Pima County) is third. From Tucson, people migrate most frequently to Phoenix; San Diego; and Pinal County, Arizona. We export people to surrounding states, Texas, the South, and the Midwest. Net migration is marked by college and military-age persons and those inexorably approaching their prime.

Tucson Water—Watering Trees and Shrubs
The soil surrounding the plant's roots, called the "root zone", serves as a storage tank from which the plant draws moisture. Most of the roots spread 1-1/2 to 3 times as wide as the plant's canopy and usually penetrate 2 to 3 feet deep, depending upon the size of the plant. Shallow or compacted soils can cause shorter and wider root zones. Water the complete root zone each time you irrigate.
