This Child-Naming Discussion Will Just Never End, Will It?
I got a chuckle out of Tom Danehy's tongue-in-cheek follow-up piece (Sept. 4) advising a former athlete of his against giving her unborn child a wild name. I have to agree with his premise that it could label the kid in the eyes of others prone to racial stereotyping and limit his/her chances in life. With names like Shaquille, Kareem or Cassius, a kid better be damn good at sports, or they face a life of diminished possibilities. Same goes for Beyonce, Ziggy or Denzel. If it wasn't for the entertainment industry, these folks would be signing checks with initials only or be laughingstocks.
Whatever you do, avoid following this new trend of waiting months or even a year to name your child so you can select something that reflects their emerging personality. I mean, can you imagine how horrible it would be to go through life as Tight-Ass Danehy? It gives me shivers just to think about it.

For my money, Allison Janney has the best moment in the film as Juno's mom, who cuts down a sonogram technician for looking down on her daughter. J.K. Simmons got his best role yet as Juno's calm, bemused dad, who has the most classic of reactions to her impending child.

Mugging Malaise | Cinema Feature | Tucson Weekly
In keeping with the boilerplate plotting necessary for dumb comedies, Wiig at first thinks the clueless brothers are huge losers, and then she decides that their love and positive attitude means they'll be great fathers. I wasn't sure why she was convinced of this, because in spite of their love and positive attitude, they remain total assholes throughout the film, and studies have shown that total assholes are not good at child-rearing.

I've been a mime since I was 7, when I started studying mime, theater, song and dance in Spring Green, Wis. I was lucky in that as a child, I was able to study with Reid Gilbert, who lives in Tucson now, and who studied with Marcel Marceau's teacher. So I received a good grounding in mime in my marrow. I was a mime until about 18; then I went and did life.

Sunny Scenes | Review | Tucson Weekly
Another difference here is that the various Gaslight regulars get to try out roles that are departures from the norm. The sidekicks come to the fore; a few of the hero/villain types switch places; and the romantic plot belongs for once to the nerdy second bananas, who easily take over the show--especially Mike Yarema as Melvin. The costumes by Maryann Trombino and Renée Cloutier define him visually, from the black socks and garters worn with Bermuda shorts up to the obligatory bandaged eyeglasses. But it's Yarema's job to flesh out the character with his grating voice, deviated-septum snort, physical awkwardness and goofy intelligence. Imagine, if you can, the bastard love child of Jerry Lewis and Peter Lorre. Sarah Vanek matches Yarema point for point, and when the two raise their voices in song, their adenoidal harmonies are heartbreaking, at least to their old voice teachers.
As the surf-club adviser, David Orley gets to be a good guy for a change, and is convincing as a master of the zen of shooting the curl. Joe Cooper yuks it up, Southern-style, as the greedy developer; imagine, if you can, the bastard love child of Col. Tom Parker and Foghorn Leghorn.

¡Ask a Mexican! | Ask a Mexican! | Tucson Weekly
Dear Half-Wab: How about "¿A quien chingada le importa?" ("Who the fuck cares?") Seriously, few things peeve the Mexican more than when someone questions a person's ethnic identity. I don't care if it's gabachos calling American citizens "anchor babies" or Mexican nationalists insisting someone must be born in Mexico to call themselves a Mexican; as I've written before, national character is never static, and anyone who claims otherwise is as deluded as a Minuteman. That's why I love it when half-breeds create new terms to describe their dual heritages. "White-xican" is fine, but dig further into your gabacho papi's past to create something better. My favorites are leprecano (half-Mexican, half-Irish), beaner-weiner (half-Mex, half-Kraut), Puerto Nortalian (quarter-Puerto Rican, quarter-Italian, half-Norwegian) and Korexican, the child of a Korean and Mexican marriage. I'm sure I'm missing out on other creative ethnic labels for half-Mexicans--got any more, gentle readers? The Mexican will publish the best ones in the coming weeks!

"I am the child of Changing Woman. That's what I was told by my elders," 82-year-old Jeanette Reed, a retired sheepherder who lives in Tuba City, tells Reid.
Changing Woman is a principle deity in the Diné pantheon, the mother of the twin boys Child Born of Water and Monster Slayer, who killed the monsters who had terrorized the Diné in the lower world. She lives on the western edge of the nation, and is called upon often by the medicine men and women who still play a role in Navajo life. Changing Woman's story provides the model for the Kinaalda, the ritual practiced after a Diné girl's first and second menses.

So Kathy was not about to quit, and she went online to look for an Arizona Mortgage Loan Expert.  That’s when she found us and I asked her some simple questions and saw why the other mortgage loan originator miscalculated the income.  It was obvious that although FHA Mortgage Loan financing can sometimes stretch debt ratios, this would stretch them too far.  Mostly due to some child support issues and the additional monthly mortgage insurance.

Growing Pains | Feature | Tucson Weekly
Indeed, Gettysburg is a poster child for how convoluted these expansions can become. When the park was set aside in 1895, marking the site of a bloody Civil War battle, few could have imagined that this federal preserve would someday battle the creep of residential development. But that's exactly what is happening, as park officials struggle to protect its historical integrity.

Soundbites | Soundbites | Tucson Weekly
As a child of the '70s and '80s, maybe I'm falling into that whole nostalgic trap here, but I must say that Steely Dan provided one of the foremost soundtracks of my youth. All you had to do was turn on the radio (as you still can) to hear their incredible run of hit songs with substance: "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Peg" (which De La Soul once famously sampled), "Do It Again," "Josie," "Kid Charlemagne," "My Old School," "Hey Nineteen" ... I could go on and on. And due to those aforementioned perfectionist tendencies, you can bet that Fagen and Becker have assembled a crack band to back them up.

Guest Commentary | Guest Commentary | Tucson Weekly
With all of the above still holding true for minors worldwide, I'm glad to hear that Arizona state Rep. David Schapira, D-Tempe, has proposed making smoking in a vehicle with anyone 17 and younger a crime. His ban would have drivers incur fines of $50 or more per child.
Schapira said, as quoted by The Associated Press: "We already protect children from child abuse," and, "I think if you are smoking in a vehicle, to me, that is child abuse."

Memory and Geography | Review | Tucson Weekly
McNeil Street was the same, with the addition of smashed-up cars on the debris-filled lawns. A trash bag dangled from a tree. In one picture, "Aftermath: The Wichita Falls Tornado, 1600 Block Aldrich Avenue," a lone child playing on the sidewalk looks like the last person on Earth.
Outside town, the contest between nature and civilization is even starker. Gohlke's family frequently made the rough drive over dirt roads out to the ranch where his mother had lived for a time as a child. "Ross Family Ranch House, Clay County, North Texas," 1972, shows a plain-white house perched on the open land, a fragile wire fence out front its only defense against the great dramas of nature.
