A new pizza joint called Vito's Pizza Kitchen is serving New York-style pizza, sandwiches and desserts at 2921 E. Fort Lowell Road. Chef Roy Santana says he uses the same recipe for the crust and sauce that his parents used at their Chicago pizzeria, where they sold New York-style pizza back in the 1960s. He also says numerous New Yorkers have already given him the thumbs-up. "I seriously take my pie very seriously. It's really thin, it's really crispy and it's full of flavor," said Santana. Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday. Delivery is available within a two-mile radius; 867-8008.
Nimbus Bistro at 6464 E. Tanque Verde Road is hosting a tasting of several freshly stocked spirits from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 10. Double White Vodka from Poland, Deerstalker single-malt Scotch, and whiskies from High West Distillery in Utah will be sampled, and the event is free; 733-1111.

Neighborhood Heartbreak | Currents Feature | Tucson Weekly
The school-closure plan includes several proposed mergers: Duffy Elementary students would go to Bonillas, Howell, Sewell and Robison elementary schools; Fort Lowell Elementary students to Townsend Middle School, which would become a preK-8 program; Jefferson Park Elementary students to Blenman or Cragin elementary schools; Reynolds Elementary students to Erickson and Ford elementary school; Roberts Elementary students to Naylor Middle School, which will become a K-8 school; Rogers Elementary students to Kellond Elementary; Van Horne Elementary students to Bloom Elementary; and Wrightstown Elementary students to Henry Elementary.
To most, the Richey neighborhood looks like a typical urban area, located south of Grant Road and west of Oracle Road. The neighborhood, however, is the Pascua Yaqui Village, where generations of Yaqui families lived long before the Pascua Yaqui were given reservation land southwest of Tucson in the mid-1960s, and federal recognition as a tribe in the late-1970s.

This Flan Is Amazing | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
This flan was made by the people at Milagro’s Café, which opened about a month ago at 3156 E. Fort Lowell Road. I was compelled to stop in after I’d heard the place would be the first restaurant in town to serve coffee by Café Aqui, a small microroastery on South Sixth Avenue that turns out some really killer java.

My personal favorite? Wettstein's painting of the No-Tel Motel, which includes what Wettstein calls "a naughty little dog" sitting right out front. All Wettstein's subjects are represented with skill and wit, and some take on a deeper meaning-like the historic cemetery on Fort Lowell Road, which is depicted so that the shapes of the graveyard's crosses are reflected by a nearby telephone pole. The painting makes for a nice little juxtaposition of past and present-just what Wettstein wants his viewers to think about. Icons of Tucson opens Tuesday, Sept. 4, and will be up through October. --A.M.

Tangerine Gallery Contemporary Art and Traditional Craft, 2522 E. Fort Lowell Road
Artseye, a gallery within Photographic Works, 3550 E. Grant Road
Just east of Dent-Busters, at Tucson Boulevard and Fort Lowell Road, Steven Derks' steel sculptures rise up in the parking lot of the old TLC secondhand furniture shop. A more unlikely location for the new Tangerine Gallery is hard to imagine.
Likewise, a mile or two southeast on Grant Road--west of Dodge Boulevard and east of Tork's Café--the glass-and-wood façade of ArtsEye Gallery soars up in the midst of dowdy shopping centers.
Likewise, Warren says so many people drive by on Fort Lowell that she gets plenty of drop-in traffic at Tangerine, much of it attracted by Derks' found-metal sculptures out front. Warren also has another business that helps keep her gallery afloat. She's wholesaled handmade copperwork from Michoacán to galleries and museums around the United States, and the gleaming pots and vases are now prominently displayed in her own place.

Dealing with the undead is old hat to Carol Stoner, who started bartending at the now-defunct Road to Ruin at Golf Links and Kolb roads more than three decades ago. She's been at Nancy's for nine years and tells us they get a decent after-work crowd from places like Applebee's, with a lot of women.

The Paris Flea Market is less of a flea market and more of a place offering clarification of the term "shabby chic." The shop is located inconspicuously on a corner of Loretta Drive and Grant Road, in an adorable little house that shopkeepers Cate Striegel and Amy Jesionowski have reinvented into an altar to genuine, sweet old stuff. All the tags are handwritten, and they describe items as adorable, precious and sweet. And accurate, they are.

At Plaza Palomino (Swan and Fort Lowell roads), Firecracker Bistro will close on Dec. 24. It will reopen in late January as country French bistro with cuisine by an award winning five-diamond chef, Philippe Trosch, who formerly worked at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. Say goodbye to the rooftop fire special effects.
Also at Plaza Palomino, Judith Baigent (formerly Berger) will sign her Culinary Concepts cookbook on Saturdays, Dec. 8 and 15, from 9 a.m. to noon. Browse the store and sample recipes at 2930 N. Swan Road; 321-0968. According to the Web site BizBuySell, Culinary Concepts is for sale.

Faces of Buddhism | Feature | Tucson Weekly
A few are members of the Zen Desert Sangha (ZDS), located on Martin Street off of Fort Lowell Road. One of Tucson's oldest continual formal Buddhist centers, ZDS celebrated its 25th birthday in May.
T he ethnic Buddhist community in the U.S. views the survival of the dharma (the basic rules underlying life and existence) in a more pragmatic way. Lan Nguyen arrived in Tucson from Bac-Lien, a town south of Saigon, in 1980, along with dozens of other mostly Buddhist refugees from Vietnam and Southeast Asia. She's standing in front of a market near Grant Road and Stone Avenue with about 15 other women, children and men.
Each is holding a bag or shopping cart full of bananas, cookies, cans of Coke and Asian pears to give "alms" or "offerings" to the 30 barefoot and golden-robed Vietnamese monks and nuns who are circling the building to mark the occasion of the Buddha's birthday in May. Only two attendees speak English, and all are associated with the ornately decorated Minh Dang Quang Buddhist temple just off of Oracle Road, where on Sundays, Nguyen attends services spoken in Vietnamese.
The temple recently began offering an early Sunday service in English for Westerners, to be more inclusive. People from the temple regularly visit nursing homes and prisons to serve people who cannot come to them. Dao Chuan, a 71-year-old Western monk from the temple, is the on-call Buddhist chaplain at Northwest Medical Center, Tucson Medical Center and Tucson Heart Hospital. He recently performed a "refuge" ceremony for seven inmates, at the Arizona State Prison Complex on South Wilmot Road, who officially wanted to enter the Buddhist path. He's even on the agenda to give the invocation at the Tucson City Council meeting in July--city officials said the Buddhist invocation will be the first in years, if not ever--with a representative from a different Buddhist group scheduled to do so in September.
