Hidden Memories | Cinema Feature | Tucson Weekly
But memory is rarely that clean. Usually, we remember bits and pieces of the past mixed in with fantasy and imagination, and that's all edited to make things either more or less horrifying, or more or less flattering to ourselves, depending on our psychological makeup.

Paper Trail | Currents Feature | Tucson Weekly
Cruz claimed that immigrants--including pregnant women, children and the elderly--sometimes weren't fed for up to 20 hours. Cruz also said that searches of immigrants were haphazard: He snapped Polaroids of detainees displaying their overlooked watches, belts and makeup kits. Knives and guns have been found in cells, he says, placing both detainees and agents at risk.

Still, the makeup in this movie is pretty damn good. Skinless bodies walk about while having conversations, with their spine bones sticking out of the muscles in their backs. The details in the facial muscles are impressive, and some of the stuff with the creatures from hell remains nightmarish.
There's a peak at Pinhead, the guy with all the nails in his face before he gets transformed. We get to see actor Doug Bradley as himself; he's creepy both with the makeup and without.

I hadn't watched this in years, and I had forgotten how funny the movie was. The standout scene for me is Tony Shalhoub getting his alien head shot off in a pawn shop, only to have it grow back in grisly fashion. The performance highlight in the movie would have to be Vincent D'Onofrio as Edgar, the unfortunate human who has his skin ripped off and used for a disguise by an alien. His slow deterioration is wonder of makeup effects, thanks to the king, Rick Baker.

Local Shopping Adventure! | Gift Guide | Tucson Weekly
My favorite items include the Lucky 13 onesie baby outfits that say "tattoo your soul" ($23.99) and a clever oversized purse that says "nothing to declare," with an X-ray image of a lot to declare, such as a homemade bomb and a knife hidden underneath a lei and some makeup ($44.99).

The Skinny | The Skinny | Tucson Weekly
A legal fight over the legislative map has been going on since the boundaries were drawn, but the redistricting commission has successfully argued that federal requirements--such as preserving communities of interest and protecting minority rights--took precedence over considering the competitive makeup of the districts.

When You Wish | Cinema Feature | Tucson Weekly
The real star of the film is Pfeiffer, who allows herself to look pretty damn awful in the movie. Her character is hundreds of years old, but she is able to restore her youth momentarily as she sets out on her quest for the fallen star. The more she uses her powers, the more she falls apart. Pfeiffer plays her character's physical deterioration as comedy rather than horror; huge credit should go to the makeup staff that managed to make one of the world's most beautiful women quite disgusting.

Kevin Spacey is excellent as Ron Klain, former chief of staff to Al Gore, who was thrust into one of the strangest episodes in political history. But the real star is Laura Dern, who is kind of frightening as Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris; Dern masterfully captures her self-centered, monstrous personality, as well as her heavy makeup. There's a great scene where Jeb Bush calls Harris to inform her that the election is screwed up. Dern plays those strange facial ticks perfectly.

¡Ask a Mexican! | Ask a Mexican! | Tucson Weekly
Dear Coño: You honestly think "anti-immigrant campaigns" (your words, not mine) arise to protect legal immigrants? And they say it's Mexicans who never bother to learn American civics and history! Where did you naturalize--outside a 7-Eleven? How do you account for Chinese getting lynched out of California's Gold Rush during the 1850s, Japanese internment during World War II, the constant railings by Know Nothings about foreign cultures invading our shores without care for legal status, the centuries-long obsession with who's white and who's not right? The Mexican can't help but to grin extra-grande when he hears people profess to love legal immigrants and hate the illegal ones. History just doesn't prove it. If this were truly the case, anti-immigrant loons wouldn't get their chonis in a bunch about language, ethnic makeup, and culture like they always do. They wouldn't care about the rise of Univisión, chickens in the back yard, billions of dollars in remittances to the motherland--and yet they do. So, a challenge: Who among you can truly say they hate the illegal Mexican but not the legal one? Who among you doesn't care about culture but everything about the law? The best three responders (keep answers under 100 words) get a Border Patrol hat or a copy of my ¡Ask a Mexican! book--their choice!

"It took him eight hours to do my makeup for the first time," Thompson said. "It's more like painting a canvas than makeup."

Cinematic Slaughter | Cinema Feature | Tucson Weekly
Black has what is perhaps the most brutal role of his career as a man who runs out of heroin while deep in the jungle (the remainder of his stash is stolen by a bat). When he's tied to a tree going through withdrawal, the film soars to new, gross heights. On top of all this, there's the visual wonderment of Tom Cruise buried under makeup as a foul-mouthed studio boss. It's the funniest thing Cruise has ever done.

Now Showing at Home | Now Showing at Home | Tucson Weekly
There's a reunion of some original cast and crew, featuring stars Betsy Palmer (who played Jason's mom), Adrienne King (the lone survivor) and horror makeup legend Tom Savini, who actually lent his expertise to the film (very possibly his worst work).
Naomi Watts is stunning stepping into the role of Ann, previously played by Fay Wray and Jessica Lange (actually, the role was called Dwan in the '76 version, but it had the same purpose). Watts does so much more than scream. She and Andy Serkis (playing Kong under CGI makeup) actually create a moving relationship between Beauty and the Beast.

On Commitment | Review | Tucson Weekly
Then there's Rhonda Hallquist as Beth, undergoing the deepest transformations over the course of the play, from distraught in the opening scene, to ditzy in the flashback, to radiant in the end; in her last scene, she somehow looks younger. It's called acting, not makeup.

Media Watch | Media Watch | Tucson Weekly
"It's very telling of the makeup of our audience that they welcome KNST and me into their homes, into their cars, into their lives, to allow them to continue to be informed. So it's not necessarily anything on the part of the market. The management at KNST is incredibly supportive, and there are a lot of people I work with who are outstanding reporters. I don't know if it's anything I can take credit for individually. KNST as an entity has always been committed to that."

Gradual Transformations | Review | Tucson Weekly
Leanné Whitewolf Charlton has the least Jekyll-and-Hyde work; in the first act, she portrays Albertine, and in the second, she's Maud Moon. Her characters age significantly through the course of each act, and Whitewolf Charlton manages this purely through performance, without the crutch of makeup and only the most necessary costume changes. Her Albertine begins as a strong-willed child, bound culturally to her Goshute people even though she appreciates the protection of her Anglo foster mother. Through her life, Albertine tells herself the traditional stories of her people, stories that parallel her own situation and offer her either hope or resignation.

In 2006, UA MFA student Laura Milkins transformed herself as part of her project "Embracing Paris Hilton," which required platinum locks and lots of makeup. Now, for the Perfect Woman Project--her MFA thesis--Milkins is transforming herself once again. Last November, Milkins placed personal ads throughout the country asking people to submit "perfect woman" characteristics on her blog. In February, blog participants picked their favorite male entry for Milkins to date. I haven't met Milkins, but I did sit down to talk with Delia W. Oman--the result of Milkins' transformation. Check out Milkins' work at the 2008 Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition at the UA Museum of Art. You can meet Oman and Milkins' fellow MFA artists from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17. For more information, go to the exhibition Web site.

Road runner : Survey: We spend less time driving, more time griping | www.azstarnet.com ®
I bring up, once again, the oh-so-Tucson maneuvers such as the one some of us affectionately call the Green Light Stop. Then there also are the drivers who enjoy driving below the speed limit in the left lane, and the ones who try to eat a breakfast burrito while talking on the phone, shifting gears and applying makeup. OK, that wasn't fair; most of those people have automatic transmissions.

A Hero With Issues | Cinema Feature | Tucson Weekly
But Batman wouldn't be Batman if his villains weren't, in some way, larger than life. Of all The Dark Knight's successful elements, the most forceful is the character of the Joker as performed by the late Heath Ledger. Nolan and Ledger completely rethought the Joker, beginning with his look. In previous incarnations, the character was done up in perfectly applied clown makeup. Ledger's Joker looks like he stole discount beauty products from Kmart and put them on in the dark. Which makes sense, because the Joker's not a beautician; he's a psychopathic killer.

While naming few names, "Trouble in Toyland" warns that some deadly toys, makeup and jewelry for kids contain toxic materials, dangerous amounts of lead, small parts that could be choking hazards, or small magnets that could pose a problem if children were to swallow more than one. "Trouble in Toyland" notes that the Consumer Product Safety Commission reported almost 73,000 kids younger than 5 ended up in emergency rooms as a result of toy-related injuries in 2005.

Napolitano impact on boards to linger | www.azstarnet.com ®
Over time, as the more conservative Brewer makes her own picks to fill vacancies that come up, the makeup of those boards likely will see the addition of more small-government advocates and, more generally, more Republicans and fewer Democrats.

Foreclosure Fallout | Feature | Tucson Weekly
